AI Search Visibility

Is a Google Business Profile enough to get found in AI search?

Most small business owners think their Google Business Profile covers them. For AI search, it does not. Here is the difference and what you actually need.

No. A Google Business Profile controls your visibility in Google Maps and the local pack, but it does not control how ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews describe or recommend your business. To get recommended by AI tools you need answer-shaped content on your own website.

What does a Google Business Profile actually do?

A Google Business Profile (GBP) is the panel that appears when someone searches for your business name directly, or looks for a local service in Google Maps. It shows your address, phone number, opening hours, reviews and photos. It is essential for local map visibility and you should absolutely have one, keep it updated and collect reviews on it.

But that is where its job ends. A GBP does not publish content. It does not answer questions. And it does not control how AI tools describe or recommend your business when someone asks a question in your category.

How is AI search visibility different?

When someone asks ChatGPT “what is the best cleaning service in Geelong?” or asks Google “who are the best tradies for bathroom renovations in Melbourne?”, the AI is not reading your Google Business Profile. It is drawing on:

  • Your website content — specifically, how clearly and directly it answers the questions your customers ask
  • Structured data on your site — schema markup that tells AI what your content means
  • Third-party mentions — references to your business across directories, review platforms, local press and industry sites
  • Consistency — matching details across all online sources builds trust; conflicting information reduces it

None of these signals come from your GBP. They come from your website and your broader online presence.

Why do so many business owners think the GBP is enough?

Because for years it largely was. A well-maintained Google Business Profile with strong reviews could get a local business most of the visibility it needed. Google Maps and the local pack drove significant foot traffic and phone calls. For that use case, the GBP is still valuable.

But the search environment has changed. AI Overviews now appear on an estimated 15 to 25 percent of all searches in 2026, and the share is higher for the conversational, question-shaped queries that AI search handles best. These are exactly the kinds of searches local customers use when choosing a service. A GBP is invisible to that layer of search entirely.

What do you need instead?

You need a website that is built to answer questions, not just list services. Every page should target one specific question your customers ask, lead with the direct answer in the first one or two sentences, be structured so AI can extract a clean, self-contained chunk, and connect to related pages so the whole site reads as an authority on your topic.

You also need schema markup — code that tells AI systems what your content is and how it is organised — and you need consistent, credible mentions of your business across the web. Reviews, directories, industry associations and local press all count. But the website is the foundation everything else points back to.

Should I still use my Google Business Profile?

Yes — keep it updated, respond to reviews, add photos, and make sure your hours and contact details are accurate. It still drives Maps traffic and it is one of the consistent-mentions signals that supports AI trust. Just do not mistake it for your AI search strategy. It is one piece, not the whole picture.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Google Business Profile enough to get found in AI search?

No. A GBP controls your Google Maps and local pack visibility but does not control how ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Overviews recommend your business. You need answer-shaped content on your own website, structured data, and consistent mentions across credible sources.

What is the difference between a Google Business Profile and AI search visibility?

A GBP manages how your business appears in Google Maps and local search panels. AI search visibility is about whether AI tools name your business when someone asks a question in your category. They are separate systems requiring separate strategies.
